Meal on Wheels

Meals on Wheels is a non-profit organization that partners with over 5,000 organizations to care for seniors 60+ years of age. Did you know that seniors are at a high risk of hunger and/or malnutrition due to the continual increase of our economy, while also on fixed incomes? It’s true! Meals on Wheels is constantly growing and with a predicted 93 million seniors by year 2030.

As a proud advocate for our senior community, I am delighted to serve our local seniors meals every Tuesday. I have had my route for over two years. This has allowed me to build relationships with some of the nicest people. People who look forward to seeing a friendly, smiling face each day with nourishing meals to keep them healthy and strong.

Recently I have joined a group of colleagues in the kitchen, prepping and packing meals to get them ready for delivery. This has been a learning experience for me, as I hadn’t realized how many people are needed to ensure the kitchen runs smoothly. From planning the most nutritious meals, ordering the product, cooking in bulk, measuring estimated amounts that reduce any waste and provides enough food needed, serving the meals on trays, sealing each tray, packing them in thermal food bags, and then loading them on the trucks. Those are only to name a small handful of responsibilities that are needed, not to mention the clean up and sterilization of all of the equipment.

I am proud to announce that I have recently joined the board of directors for our local Meal on Wheels. It is not only a passion of mine to serve within our community, but to also encourage others to join me and participate as well.
